About Felt, Oklahoma

Felt is a community of 77 people in Cimarron County, out toward the far west end of the Oklahoma Panhandle. The town grew up on a railroad. A line organized in 1925 as the Elkhart and Santa Fe Railway laid track from Elkhart, Kansas, through Boise City and ended at Felt, and a post office opened here on July 16, 1926.

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe leased and owned the line, and in 1932 it pushed the tracks on to Clayton, New Mexico. That extension didn't last. In 1942 the railroad gave up the whole stretch between Boise City and Clayton, and Felt lost its trains. Today the Rita Blanca National Grassland surrounds the town.

  • Named for C.F.W. FeltThe town took its name from C.F.W. Felt, a Santa Fe Railroad man, because Felt was the planned end of the new line from Elkhart. The post office that opened in 1926 carried the same name.
  • A Dust Bowl picture in 1936In 1936, during the Great Depression, a photographer stood on a farm at Felt and took one of the best-known pictures of the Dust Bowl. It shows a farmer and his sons heading into a dust storm.
  • Near three states' cornerFelt sits less than five miles north of Texas and just over 12 miles east of New Mexico. No Oklahoma community is closer to the Texhomex marker, the corner where the three states meet, which lies about 14 miles to the west-southwest.
