About Findlay, Pennsylvania

Findlay is a township of 6,372 people in Allegheny County, in the West Hills suburbs of Pittsburgh. It is home to Pittsburgh International Airport, which it shares with Moon Township to the east. Before 1800 this land was the southern half of a very wide Moon Township, and the court already treated it as "Second Moon," with its own supervisors and constables.

At the November session of 1819, thirty-one residents asked the court to make Second Moon a township of its own, since Moon stretched ten to thirteen miles across. Commissioners James Martin, Thomas Aten and James Thornburg filed a dividing line on January 11, 1820. Some people objected, so a shorter line followed on February 21, 1822, and the court confirmed it at its next term. The new township's post office, one of the oldest in that part of the county, opened in 1828.

  • Named for a governorThe township honors William Findlay, born in Mercersburg on June 20, 1768, to a Scotch-Irish family. A Democratic legislator, he served as state treasurer from 1807, governor from 1817 to 1820, U.S. senator from 1821 and treasurer of the United States Mint from 1827. He died on November 12, 1846.
  • William Guy's gristmillAn early gristmill stood on Montour's Run, a mile below Imperial. No one remembered who built it, but William Guy was running it by 1820. When drought dried up the stream, horses turned the mill, and later a steam engine was added. Forbes' mill and Strouse's mill worked on Potato Garden Run, but both had fallen to ruin by the time the county history was written.
  • Imperial, a coal company townThe Imperial Coal Company laid out the village of Imperial on what had been Robert Wilson's farm. About six hundred people lived there, mostly miners and their families, and the company owned most of the houses. Its mines turned out one thousand tons of coal a day, its 102 coke ovens stood along the Montour Railroad, which it controlled, and four hundred men worked for it.
