About Imperial, Pennsylvania

Imperial is a community of 2,722 people in Allegheny County, spread across North Fayette and Findlay Townships near Pittsburgh International Airport. It grew up along Montour Run as a coal town. The Imperial Coal Company, incorporated in 1878, laid out the village on land that had been Robert Wilson's farm. The company sent out its first coal in July 1879, and most of it went to northern Ohio.

The new settlement was first called Montour City, but it soon took the name of the company that built it. A post office named Imperial opened in April 1880. By 1889 the town had about one hundred and thirty houses, and the coal company owned nearly all of it.

  • End of the Montour lineThe Montour Railroad was organized as a separate company, but the Imperial Coal Company controlled it. Its tracks ended at Imperial, and the line carried coal from the town and the mines around it.
  • Built by McCreery's companyWhen the Imperial Coal Company was incorporated in 1878, William McCreery served as its president, L. M. Jenkins as treasurer and F. L. Shallenberger as superintendent. Within two years their company had opened its mines, laid out a town for its workers and taken control of the railroad that hauled the coal.
  • Amazon arrives in 2020In 2020, more than a century after the coal company laid out the town, Amazon opened a large complex of fulfillment centers in Imperial, beside Pennsylvania Route 576.
