About Florence, Mississippi

Florence is a city of 4,572 people in Rankin County, about 12 miles south-southeast of Jackson. It grew up as a post town on the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad, and in its early years large sawmills and cotton gins turned the timber and cotton of the surrounding farm country into trade. By 1900 the town had 300 people.

Local money soon followed the railroad. The Citizens Bank opened in 1906 with $15,000 in capital, and an early state history reported that Florence was gaining people quickly because good farmland surrounded it. A century later the town was still growing. The 2010 census counted 4,141 people, up 72.8% from 2000, which made Florence the 12th fastest growing city in Mississippi.

  • A newspaper since 1896The Steen's Creek Times, a Democratic weekly, began publishing in Florence in 1896, with George G. Hurst as its editor. The Steen's Creek name lives on in the town today at Steen's Creek Elementary School.
  • A school with a reputationFlorence High School began as a preparatory school, and an early state history counted it among the finest schools anywhere in Mississippi. It now serves grades 9 through 12 in the Rankin County School District, alongside Florence Elementary and Florence Middle School.
  • Growing toward the PearlThe city limits have pushed north toward Richland and spread both east and west. Florence is expected to keep expanding until it reaches the Pearl River, the boundary between Rankin County and Hinds County.
