About Flower Hill, Maryland
Flower Hill is a community of 14,108 people in Montgomery County, and the 2020 census was the first to count it. Within its bounds lies Stewartown, sometimes spelled Stewardtown, a Black community that grew up around the crossing of Stewartown and Goshen Roads.
Stewartown took shape some years after the other Black settlements north of Gaithersburg that appear on a 1944 map. Its families built a Methodist church, a school and a society of their own, and the places they founded still shape the neighborhood's parks and congregations.
- A school where the park isStewartown's school stood on the ground that is now Stewartown Park. The community's homes lined Stewartown Road, and a modern townhouse complex now marks that old residential area.
- A society of its ownResidents formed a benevolent group of their own, which records name both as the Stewartown Literary, Social and Religious Society and as Stewartown Moses.
- Two churches become GoshenStewartown's Methodist congregation joined with the Brook Grove Methodist church in the 1990s. The combined congregation is Goshen United Methodist Church, which carries on the work of both.
