About Gahanna, Ohio
Gahanna is a city of 35,726 people in Franklin County, just northeast of Columbus, on the Big Walnut Creek. In 1814 Joseph Clark bought 800 acres here from Governor Worthington, and in 1849 his son John Clark, of Ross County, started a town on that land. John had named the property the Gahanna Plantation, after the old name of the Big Walnut, a Native American name meaning three creeks that meet and become one.
A rival village, Bridgeport, grew up just across Granville Street, also on the creek. Jesse Baughman, once a Franklin County commissioner, founded it in 1853. In time the two villages made peace and merged, and they chose the name Gahanna because Ohio already had a Bridgeport. In March 1881, 55 citizens asked the county to incorporate the village, and the county agreed that June. The incorporation was recorded on August 8, 1881, and L. John Neiswander took office as the first mayor on October 6.
- Three In OneThe city's official seal carries the words "Three In One," pointing to the meeting of three creeks behind the town's name. Big Walnut Creek and its tributaries, Rocky Fork Creek and Sycamore Run, still shape the ground the city sits on.
- The township's first gristmillAccording to an 1880 history of the county, Gahanna's gristmill was built by a man named Baughman, and it was the first in all of Mifflin Township. He operated it successfully until 1865, when failing health led him to sell it.
- The Big Walnut Country ClubDuring the 1920s, segregation in Columbus shut Black families out of most pools, golf courses and playing fields. The Big Walnut Country Club, planned in 1925, was formed two years later on almost 20 acres lying between Rocky Fork Creek and the Big Walnut. It ranked among the earliest Black country clubs anywhere in the nation.
- Golf, archery and dancingMembers of the Big Walnut Country Club golfed, played tennis and badminton, swam, boated, tried archery, ate and danced. For decades the club served as a social, professional and political center for Central Ohio's Black community.
- Gahanna's first public parkThe country club closed in 1963, and in 1970 Gahanna purchased the property. One year after buying it, the city turned the grounds into Friendship Park, the first public park Gahanna ever had, and the park still carries the Friendship name.
