About Minerva Park, Ohio
Garry Waldo Meeker created Minerva Park to attract riders to a new electric railway. The recreation grounds honored Minerva Shipherd, wife of the rail company's first president.
The village began as Minerva Park, a trolley amusement park that opened on July 13, 1895. It had a roller coaster, a small zoo and a lake. Olentangy Park drew its crowds away, and it closed in 1902. Homes were built on the site starting in 1927.
- What happened to the parkAfter the park closed, the grounds became a graveyard for old streetcars. The land sat empty until 1927, and Minerva Park became a village in 1940.
