About Westerville, Ohio
Westerville is a city in Franklin and Delaware counties, northeast of Columbus, with a 2020 population of 39,190. The community is home to Otterbein University and to sites associated with composer Benjamin Hanby and the national temperance movement. State Street is the principal north-south thoroughfare through the old town center known as Uptown Westerville.
- Otterbein's BeginningsThe institution began as Blendon Young Men's Seminary in 1839 and became Otterbein College in 1847.
- Hanby's SongsWhile associated with Otterbein, Benjamin Hanby wrote "Darling Nelly Gray" in 1856 and "Up on the Housetop" in 1864.
- Temperance HeadquartersThe Anti-Saloon League moved its national headquarters to Westerville in 1909, helping the city acquire the nickname "Dry Capital of the World."
- Council-Manager PioneerIn 1916, Westerville became Ohio's first village and second municipality to adopt the council-manager form of government.
- Hanby HouseHanby House on West Main Street is maintained as a memorial to Benjamin Hanby and his father, Bishop William Hanby.
