About George Mason, Virginia

George Mason is a census-designated place of 11,162 people in Fairfax County, just south of the city of Fairfax. It takes in the main campus of George Mason University and the neighborhoods to its south and southwest, and it carries the name of the Founding Father George Mason.

Before there was a campus, this ground was the farm of John and Harriet Burtis, abolitionists from New York State who raised sheep and grew vegetables. On May 25, 1861, Corporal John Barnes of Company D of the 17th Virginia Infantry, the Fairfax Rifle Rangers, demanded supplies. Burtis gave up several sheep, but he refused to let his horses haul them to the Confederate camp at Fairfax Station. Barnes then swore he would arrest Burtis and take the team, so Burtis and his wife slipped away with the horses through the woods and made it to Washington.

  • A name picked in 1959In the fall of 1959 the young branch of the University of Virginia, then at Bailey's Crossroads, needed a lasting name. Its students, about 100 of them, had three choices: keep University College, or take the name Northern Virginia College or George Mason College. Each choice drew the same support, so in December the university's Board of Visitors chose George Mason, and the name took effect on January 1, 1960.
  • The move of 1964Planning began in 1962 for 150 acres that the City of Fairfax gave the college for a new campus. In August 1964 the school made the 12-mile move from Bailey's Crossroads, with students helping Craig Movers of Oakton by carrying things in their own cars. Its four buildings, North, South, East and West, were the first school buildings in Virginia with central air conditioning, and classes opened on September 14 for 356 freshmen and sophomores.
  • A university in 1972George Mason College stayed part of the University of Virginia until 1972. That year Governor Linwood Holton signed a law that made it independent, and it became George Mason University.
  • George Mason ForestA. G. Van Metre Associates started building the George Mason Forest neighborhood in the early 1980s. By the time the company finished in 2003, it had put up about 200 single-family homes.
