About Georgetown, Maine

In 1649, fisherman John Parker of Bedfordshire, England, bought the island from Mowhotiwormet, a chief better known as Robinhood. He paid a hogshead of rum and some pumpkins. He built the first permanent homestead there, and the land became known as Parker's Island.

Georgetown-on-Arrowsic was incorporated in 1716 and named for Fort St. George. It once included Parker's Island, Woolwich, Phippsburg and Bath. By 1841 every other part had become its own town. Parker's Island alone kept the old name.
