About Phippsburg, Maine

In 1607 English colonists chose the tip of the peninsula now called Phippsburg for their settlement. They held religious services there on August 29. They then built the Virginia of Sagadahoc, the first vessel built by English hands in America. It sailed to the Virginia Colony and then to England.

Phippsburg became its own town in 1814. Its petition asked for the name Dromore, after one of its oldest sections. Massachusetts picked a different name to honor royal governor Sir William Phips, who was actually born in Woolwich.

  • The town's coastal fortsSoldiers built Fort Popham in Civil War years, and its guns watched over the river mouth of the Kennebec. In the 1890s it controlled an underwater minefield. Fort Baldwin, built from 1905 to 1912, held troops in both World Wars.
