About Glacier, Washington

Jennie Vaughn founded the town and gave it its name in 1909. It began as a place for gold mining and logging. The Mount Baker Highway, built in 1923, opened the area to the public. Glacier is the closest community to Mount Baker, whose summit towers nearly 10,000 feet above it.

  • How the town got its nameThe town takes its name from a large glacier on nearby Mount Baker. Lucy S. Drake, who lived in the town, gave this account of the name.
