About Maple Falls, Washington
Herbert Everant Leavitt of Melbourne, Quebec, was among the first settlers. In 1888 he took up a homestead where Maple Falls now stands. He packed his supplies about 30 miles in from Bellingham. He later ran a blacksmith shop and two hotels, and served as county constable for about 24 years.
In 1914 Maple Falls made lumber and shingles, with about 100 men at work. The town supported a four-year high school, a church and a newspaper. The Bellingham Northern railway and stages served it.
