About Glenshaw, Pennsylvania

Glenshaw is a community of 8,945 people in Allegheny County, and its census area takes in parts of five townships: Shaler, Hampton, Indiana, O'Hara and Ross. The place began as Shaw's Mills, named for the mills a Pittsburgh blacksmith ran on Pine Creek, and it later grew into a coal village.

  • Shaw's Mills in 1803John Shaw worked as a blacksmith in Pittsburgh, where he did the ironwork on the first cannon cast in that city. In 1803 he moved out to what is now Glenshaw. He kept up his trade here and also ran a flour mill and a saw mill on Pine Creek, and the settlement went by Shaw's Mills before it took the name Glenshaw.
  • Coal for the Etna ironworksThe ironworks at Etna once got their coal from the mines at Glenshaw. The work brought in miners, and the people it attracted formed the small village that the 1889 county history described.
