About Gouldsboro, Maine
Gouldsboro was named for Robert Gould, who held land in the town. In 1764 Massachusetts put him in charge of the area along with Colonel Nathan Jones and Francis Shaw. After a land lottery in 1786, the first recorded settler was Thomas Frazer, an African American.
Around 1793 William Bingham of Philadelphia bought rights to most of the land. In 1795 he hired General David Cobb of Massachusetts to live there as his agent. Cobb's clerk John Black later steered the town toward lumber instead of farming.
