About Great Cacapon, West Virginia
During the Civil War, Union troops were stationed at the post office in Great Cacapon. A Confederate force mounted cannons on top of Cacapon Mountain and aimed them at the post office. A few shots were fired, yet they hit only the trees in between. The village was spared.
The town is named for the Cacapon River, from a Native American name meaning medicine water. Its first name was Cacapon Depot, on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and its post office opened in 1848. In 1876 the town added the word Great to its name. That set it apart from Little Cacapon, which also sat on the B&O mainline.
- The flood and the rebuilt bridgeThe Saint Patrick's Day Flood of 1936 washed away the old bridge at Great Cacapon. The Thurman W. Whisner Memorial Bridge, a steel Parker truss span, replaced it in 1937 with New Deal funding. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2025.
