About Hampden, Maine
Hampden is a town of 7,709 people in Penobscot County, on the Penobscot River estuary. Its first name was Wheelersborough, after Benjamin Wheeler, the settler who arrived first. When the town was incorporated on February 24, 1794, it took the name of John Hampden, the English patriot.
On September 3, 1814, during the War of 1812, a British fleet came up the Penobscot hunting the USS Adams, a frigate that had escaped upriver and dropped anchor at Hampden. About 400 militiamen under Brigadier General John Blake of Brewer tried to stop the British regulars, but their line broke under a charge and ran. Captain Charles Morris and his crew set the Adams on fire so the British could not take her, then got away over land, and the British looted Hampden and Bangor.
- A court-martial in 1816The fight at Hampden cost the Americans one man killed and eleven wounded, while the British lost two, one of them an officer, and a civilian who came to watch was also killed. Two years later Blake stood trial in Bangor for the defeat, along with Hampden's own Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew Grant and Brewer's Major Joshua Chamberlain, grandfather of the Civil War general Joshua L. Chamberlain. Blake and Chamberlain were cleared, but Grant was thrown out of the service.
- Dorothea Dix, born 1802Hampden is the birthplace of Dorothea Dix, who arrived in 1802. She taught school and wrote before she turned to studying how people with mental illness were cared for, and she carried what she learned to state legislatures, helping to change public care. During the Civil War she served as Superintendent of Army Nurses.
- Hannibal Hamlin's law officeAfter he was admitted to the bar in 1833, Hannibal Hamlin opened his law practice in Hampden, and he made his home here until 1848. He went on to Congress and then became Abraham Lincoln's vice president, opposing the spread of slavery and backing the Emancipation Proclamation. The Hampden Historical Society shows a restored version of his first law office on the grounds of its Kinsley House Museum.
