About Hidden Springs, Idaho
Hidden Springs is a planned community of 3,076 people in Ada County, founded in 1987 in the Dry Creek Valley. It was laid out over the valley's original homesteads, and today it keeps more than 800 acres as open space that can never be built on, along with its own wastewater treatment plant.
Long before the houses, the valley was a road to gold country. Gold was found on Grimes Creek on August 2, 1862, and around 1869 two partners, Alexander Rossi and Albert Robie, opened a toll road from their lumber mill on Shafer Creek, near present-day Horseshoe Bend, down through Dry Creek. Travelers headed for the Boise Basin mines could stop in the valley, where a stone hotel and a stage station stood.
- A farmhouse from about 1864Homesteader Phillip L. Schick built the first part of his house around 1864 as a small prove-up shack, and it grew in stages from there. When Hidden Springs was being developed, almost no other homestead buildings were left in the valley. The Schick-Ostolasa Farmstead is now on the National Register, and its house ranks among the oldest homes still standing in Idaho.
- A Basque home, 1927 to 2005In the early 1900s, Basque families started farming in the valley. Costan Ostolasa, born in Elanchove, Spain, in 1889, came to the United States in 1907 at 17. Three generations of the Ostolasa family lived in the old Schick farmhouse from 1927 to 2005, and Basque families from Boise remembered it as a place to gather, picnic and turn their children loose in the fields.
- Front porches and back alleysMost homes in Hidden Springs follow a neo-traditional style, and many have garages that open onto alleys behind them, so the streets out front are easier on people walking than in a typical subdivision. Hidden Springs Elementary School, part of the Boise School District, stands inside the neighborhood.
