About Hillburn, New York

John Suffern built a saw mill at Hillburn in 1795, the first industry there. His grandson James Suffern added a charcoal forge for iron in 1848 and a rolling mill in 1852. The works employed about 25 men and sold most of their output to the Erie Railroad before closing in 1872.

In 1943, attorney Thurgood Marshall represented the African-American parents of Hillburn in a school case. Mixed-race children had been sent to the Brook School, which lacked a library, indoor bathrooms and a gym. White children attended the better-equipped Main School. Marshall won, 11 years before Brown v. Board of Education.

  • How the village got its nameHillburn was originally named Woodburn. The name changed to Hillburn in 1882. The change avoided a conflict with another post office of the same name.
  • The village's earliest familiesThe Hillburn area was settled early by descendants of the Lenape and other groups. They long made a living from farms, hunting and fishing. In 1980 New York recognized their multiracial descendants as the Ramapough Mountain Indians.
