About Independence, Ohio

Independence is a city of 7,584 people in Cuyahoga County, a suburb just south of Cleveland. The community was first known as Center, and in 1830 it took the name Independence. Highways later shaped much of the town, and a large share of its land now lies under the junction where I-77 meets I-480.

  • An early cloverleaf, 1940The Willow Cloverleaf, where Brecksville and Granger roads meet, opened in 1940 as one of the nation's earliest highway interchanges, and today it mostly carries local traffic. World War II halted work on the Willow Freeway, later I-77, and crews didn't finish it until the 1950s. I-480 was connected in the late 1970s, and because the newer stack interchange largely replaced the old one, locals still call it the cloverleaf.
  • Offices on Rockside RoadIn the 1970s, Cleveland companies needed backup space and more room than their downtown offices gave them. Builders filled the Rockside corridor with offices and many hotels to serve them. Crown Center opened on Rockside Road in 1991 and became the tallest building between Downtown Cleveland and Akron, and people came to call the area Cleveland's Silicon Valley.
  • Where the Cavaliers practiceThe Cleveland Cavaliers train at their own facility in Independence. The Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine is located in the city as well.
