About Iroquois Point, Hawaii
Iroquois Point is a community of 4,549 people in Honolulu County, on Oahu at the entrance to Pearl Harbor. It is named for the USS Iroquois, a steam-powered sloop of war that entered service in 1850 and was later turned into a hospital ship caring for American sailors in Honolulu Harbor. That ship is thought to have lain at anchor near the point, and a steam tug of the same name, commissioned in 1898, was later assigned to Naval Station Honolulu.
The Army took land along the ʻEwa shore around 1905 for coast defense. Its post here was called the Iroquois Point Military Reservation until 1922, when it became Fort Weaver. In 1949 the Navy took over the fort and renamed it the Puʻuloa Naval Reservation, and from the 1950s on the land held military housing.
- Two 16 inch gunsWork on Battery Williston started in October 1921, and the Army put it into service on September 19, 1924. Its two 16 inch guns sat in the open on round concrete pads and could fire in any direction. At first the gun crews rode boats over from Fort Kamehameha, across the channel into Pearl Harbor, until a small camp was built for them on the site.
- Seabees in World War IIDuring World War II the Seabees built a camp at Iroquois Point with four Construction Battalion areas of 1000 men each and a chapel. They also built an Advance Base Construction Depot and an Advance Base Reshipment Depot, where Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit 523 was stationed.
- Navy homes rebuilt in 2003Under a 1999 act of Congress, the Navy leased Iroquois Point to Hunt Building Co. and Fluor Federal Services for 65 years; in return the companies built and repaired on Ford Island. The lease began in summer 2003. That August, more than 100 tradesmen began on the 1960s homes along Puʻuloa Lagoon's north shore, upgrading not quite half of the 1,463 homes for about $20 million at first. The neighborhood, privately run, is now Kapilina Beach Homes.
- Jets overheadThe housing sits directly beneath the approach path to runway 8L at Honolulu International Airport, so residents often watch big airliners and military jets pass low over their roofs on the way in to land.
