About Ocean Pointe, Hawaii

Ocean Pointe is a community of 14,965 people in Honolulu County, on the leeward side of OΚ»ahu about fifteen miles from Honolulu. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this part of Κ»Ewa was one of the island's largest population centers. Work there centered on sugar cane, and the Κ»Ewa Mill built villages for the people it employed. Sugar is no longer farmed on these plains, and the old fields have filled with homes.

Haseko Corporation bought the 1,100 acres in 1988. Construction began in 1997 with the houses, and the first homes sold ten years after the purchase. The last of the 2,500 homes were finished in 2008. Building then moved on to Hoakalei next door, where Ernie Els designed a golf course that opened in 2009.

“Some of the lands that make up present day Ocean Pointe and Hoakalei were believed to be part of a fabled territory called kula o Kaupeβ€˜a.”

  • A marina became a lagoonWork on a marina had been going on since 1997. In November 2011 Haseko cut the plan back to a 52-acre recreational lagoon. In March 2023, Wai Kai opened on the site, a water recreation and entertainment center built around a large wave pool.
  • Homeowners sued in 2013In July 2013, 1,800 homeowners sued Haseko, saying the switch from a marina to a lagoon had hurt their property values. A jury sided with them in September 2015 and awarded $1,300 per household, but a judge threw out the award a month later. In January 2018 a second judge ordered Haseko to pay $20 million, finding that it had misled buyers and made the change to save money. Haseko said it would appeal.
  • Laulani VillageSafeway broke ground on this 20-acre shopping center on November 3, 2011, with City Mill, the OΚ»ahu hardware chain, as a co-anchor. Petco opened with it on November 16, 2012, and Walgreens and Ross followed in 2013. In January 2014 a San Diego company, Terramar Retail Centers, bought the center for close to $100 million.
  • A new fire station in 2013Ground was broken in October 2008 for a new Κ»Ewa Beach Fire Station, and building started in late 2010. The 12,000-square-foot station went up on a donated acre at KeoneΚ»ula Boulevard and KaileoleΚ»a Drive, and it was dedicated on January 29, 2013.
