About Kapolei, Hawaii

Kapolei is a planned community of 21,411 people in the City and County of Honolulu, on the ʻEwa Plain of Oʻahu, about 25 miles from Honolulu. It is named for Puʻu o Kapolei, a volcanic cone whose name means hill of beloved Kapo. In Hawaiian legend, Kapo was the sister of Pele. Most of the ground was once sugarcane and pineapple fields on the estate of industrialist James Campbell. Kapolei Property Development, part of the James Campbell Company, is still the main builder.

Planners drafted a master plan for Kapolei in 1955 and began revising it in 1974. In 1977 the Oʻahu General Plan made it the island's second urban center, a "second city" to Honolulu. The ʻEwa Master Plan was revised in 1986, and the first homes went up in the late 1980s, with shops and offices soon after. By 2006 more than 800 companies, agencies and organizations there provided about 25,000 jobs, and the 2010 census counted 15,186 people.

“Kapolei was named after Kapo, the Hawaiian Goddess of hula and sorcery.”
Kapolei: A Historic Overview, 2020
  • Kapolei Hale, 2001Kapolei Hale was built in 2001 as the civic center of the City of Kapolei. It holds an office for the Mayor and is home to the city and county Department of Parks and Recreation. In December 2006 the Honolulu City Council approved an elevated rail line, now called Skyline, to link Kapolei with downtown. Construction started in East Kapolei on February 22, 2011, and crews began setting pillars there in April 2012. The first phase opened to Aloha Stadium on June 30, 2023.
  • A university campus in 2012In August 2012 the University of Hawaiʻi's West Oʻahu branch opened a new campus in Kapolei. Hawaii Tokai International College moved here in April 2015. Island Pacific Academy, a private school, had opened in 2004.
  • From coal to batteriesA coal power plant in Kapolei ran until 2022. Two years later, in 2024, a 585 MWh lithium iron phosphate battery opened here.
