About Ewa Gentry, Hawaii
Ewa Gentry is a housing development and census-designated place of 25,707 people in the City and County of Honolulu. It lies on the leeward side of Oahu, about twelve miles from Honolulu, on the Κ»Ewa Plain. From the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth, Κ»Ewa was one of the island's large population centers, and its work centered on sugar cane. The Κ»Ewa Mill was a major employer here, and it set up villages where its workers lived.
- Κ»Ewa means crookedThe area is also known simply as Κ»Ewa, a Hawaiian word that means "crooked."
- Built by Ewa Gentry HomesThe Κ»Ewa Plain no longer grows sugar cane. Much of the growth that followed near Ewa Beach was the work of the builder Ewa Gentry Homes, and the long-established neighborhoods it put up still bear the company's name.
- Part of Oahu's Second CityToday Ewa Gentry belongs to Oahu's new center of suburban growth. Unbroken rows of homes reach Honouliuli to the north, with Kalaeloa and Kapolei to the west. The area is called Oahu's Second City, and Kapolei serves as its downtown.
- 25,707 people in 2020The census counted 22,690 people in Ewa Gentry in 2010. By 2020 the count had grown to 25,707.
