About Hickam Housing, Hawaii
Hickam Housing is a census-designated place of 7,581 people in Honolulu County, set inside Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Most of its ground once belonged to Hickam Air Force Base, and many people still call the area by that name, while a smaller piece came from Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Mamala Bay lies along its south side, and the entrance to Pearl Harbor marks its western edge.
- Fort Kamehameha, 1916The Army built Fort Kamehameha in 1916 as a Coastal Artillery post. World War II ended the age of coastal guns, so the Army tore down most of the fort's buildings that weren't homes. The 33 houses left standing are fine examples of the Bungalow and Arts and Crafts style of that time.
- Next door to the airportThe community's eastern side meets Honolulu's airport. Part of Daniel K. Inouye International Airport actually lies within Hickam Housing's boundary.
- Schools on the baseThe Hawaii Department of Education runs Mokulele Elementary School here. The private Assets School also keeps its K-8 campus in Hickam Housing.
