About Ken Caryl, Colorado
Ken Caryl is a community of 33,811 people in Jefferson County, southwest of Denver. In 1859 Major Robert B. Bradford of Denver bought the land, built a house and opened a toll road for wagons heading west to the mining camps, at $1.50 a wagon. The inn and the road paid well until 1867, when a rival road up Turkey Creek Canyon, now Highway 285, gave travelers an easier route and took the traffic away.
Bradford died in 1876, and in 1881 his widow gave up the land. In 1895 James Adam Perley bought the house and made a good living as a dairy farmer. His family sold out in 1914 to John Charles Shaffer, a self-made millionaire who bought 2,660 acres and also owned the Rocky Mountain News. Shaffer called the ranch Ken Caryl after his two sons, Kent and Carroll, built the Manor House and raised beef cattle, but the Great Depression ruined him, and he lost the ranch to the banks.
- From cattle ranch to suburbWilliam Allen, a steel executive, bought the ranch in 1937 and bred cattle there. After his death, Johns-Manville Corporation bought the land from his estate in 1971 and built a corporate campus meant as its headquarters, with housing planned for its workers. Martin Marietta Astronautics Group bought the headquarters in 1987; it is now a Lockheed Martin building. Ken Caryl Valley's homes were mostly finished by 1997, and around 6,000 acres were set aside as open space.
- Colorow's CaveThe Ute chief Colorow was a regular visitor to the ranch until he and other Utes were forced out of the area after the Meeker Massacre of 1879. Colorow Elementary School carries his name, and a rock formation said to be one of his favorite hideouts is still called Colorow's Cave.
- A ruin saved in 2006A fire in 1967 left only the stone walls of the Bradford/Perley House standing. Colorado Preservation Inc. put it on its list of the state's most endangered sites in 2002, and after it was preserved as a ruin in 2006, the group moved it to its saved list. The fenced shell stands in the north part of the valley, beside the Bradford Pool.
- Rocks 600 million years oldThe oldest rocks in the valley, at the foot of the hills west of the Manor House, are around 600 million years old. The hogback ridge on the valley's east side rose around 70 million years ago, when layers of sedimentary rock were pushed upward. Tincup Mountain is the tallest peak in the nearby foothills.
