About Kirkland, New York
Kirkland is a town of 10,075 people in Oneida County, southwest of Utica, with the Oriskany Creek running through it. Settlers first arrived around 1787, close to where the village of Clinton stands today, on land split among the Kirkland, Brothertown and Coxe patents.
The town was carved out of the Town of Paris in 1827 and named for Samuel Kirkland, who had worked as a missionary among the Oneidas. Only two years later, in 1829, Kirkland gave up some of its land to create the new Town of Marshall. Clinton remains its only village.
- Ironworks at Franklin SpringsThe hamlet of Franklin Springs, south of Clinton, once smelted iron, and in those years it went by the name Franklin Iron Works. The works started up in 1852, and a cheese factory followed there in 1866.
- Cheese at Chuckery CornersChuckery Corners, a hamlet on NY 12 in the eastern part of town, got its own cheese factory in 1858, eight years before Franklin Springs opened one.
- Potters' clay at ManchesterThe hamlet of Kirkland, near the western town line on NY 5, was once called Manchester. Its clay was dug and used to make pottery.
- Home of Hamilton CollegeHamilton College sits on the town's western side, near College Hill, a summit west of Clinton. Kirkland College also once stood in the town.
