About Lake Forest Park, Washington

Lake Forest Park is a city of 13,630 people in King County, at the north end of Lake Washington. The Snohomish people once kept a winter village on this land, and a few tribe members still lived in its houses as late as 1903, when the arrival of loggers and settlers drove them to move elsewhere. Logging crews then worked along Lyon and McAleer creeks with flumes, skid roads and a small railway, and by 1910 most of the old growth forest was gone.

In 1909 Ole Hanson and A. H. Reid, his wife's nephew, formed the North Seattle Improvement Company and began buying up the cutover land. Civil engineer B. E. Corlett drew the plat, fitting streets and lots to the hillsides and the trees that were left. Hanson sold lots to anyone who could pay but banned saloons, shacks, stores, roadhouses and apartment houses. When a large shopping center was planned in the late 1950s, residents incorporated the city in 1961 to keep a say over their community.

“Here the laughing waters will forever make gladsome the hearts of the sylvan dwellers,”
Ole Hanson's sales brochure, 1912
  • The end of the roadAt first the lake was the easiest way to reach Seattle, 10 miles off. The Military Road was cleared and graded in 1879 and later became Bothell Way, and the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway came around the lake in 1888. Until the Red Brick Road reached Kenmore and Bothell in 1914, improved roads heading north from Seattle stopped here.
  • The 1920s building boomBetter roads and cheaper gas drew families out of the city during the 1920s, when more than 100 new houses went up in the Park. A school opened in 1923 and a civic club formed the next year. Growth went on after the Depression began in 1929. Big lots were split, and new shoreline, left dry in 1917 after work on the Lake Washington Ship Canal dropped the water level, was cut into view lots.
  • Bungalows to Tudor RevivalHanson wanted every house to look different, and the early homes ranged from small bungalows to large Colonial and Tudor Revival houses. The Harry Vanderbilt Wurdemann House, built in 1914, is one of them, and it joined the National Register in 1990.
  • Founder turned Seattle mayorHanson and Reid built homes of their own in the Park but stayed only a few years. Hanson went on to be Seattle's mayor during the Seattle General Strike of 1919, when he set out to break the unions, and the two men later developed San Clemente in Southern California.
  • A park on Lyon CreekFor fifty years a lot on Lyon Creek belonged to Marcia and Robert Morris, who built a modernist house and a horse stable there. The city bought the land in 1998, tore down both buildings and turned it into Lyon Creek Park, where hundreds of volunteers helped put in 5,000 native shrubs and plants.
