About Lake Lorraine, Florida
Lake Lorraine is a census-designated place of 7,142 people in Okaloosa County, beside Eglin Air Force Base and the Choctawhatchee Bay. Its first homes went up in the 1970s along Country Club Road, which curves around a golf course, and residents still use a Shalimar mailing address.
The recession of 1976 stalled that early growth, and several lots inside the U of the golf course were left half built and abandoned until they were later rebuilt. A second wave came in the 1990s and 2000s, when the woods on Black's Point were cleared for houses and the new streets were named for famous golfers.
- A target in the bayDuring World War II, Eglin Field anchored a battleship-sized target float off Black's Point, the southernmost tip of what is now Lake Lorraine, in the waters of the Choctawhatchee Bay below it. In wartime that stretch of the bay was known as Eglin water range 60.
- The back gate to EglinA back gate onto Eglin Air Force Base once opened beside base housing, reached by Davis Court at the northeast corner of Country Club Road. It was shut in the mid-1970s, as base security tightened and neighbors worried about traffic cutting through their residential streets.
- A lake that met the bayLake Lorraine began as a freshwater lake, kept apart from the Choctawhatchee Bay by a narrow sandbar. Sometime in the 1990s the bay broke through that sandbar, and silt closed the old drainage channel that had carried the lake's water out to the tip of Black's Point.
- Growing since 2010The census counted 7,010 people in Lake Lorraine in 2010 and 7,142 in 2020.
