About Shalimar, Florida
Shalimar became a town in June 1947 to protect gambling at the Shalimar Club casino. State law closed clubs in unincorporated areas from midnight Saturday until Monday morning. Developer Clifford Meigs agreed to incorporate and served as first mayor. After Governor Fuller Warren stepped in against gambling, the club closed for good in 1956.
After Germany stopped sending dye during World War I, Silas Gibson was contracted to build a plant at Black Pointe. The plant had its own school, where W. N. Hartgrove taught. It closed in the early 1920s.
