About Mary Esther, Florida

Mary Esther got its name from John Newton, the first postmaster there. Newton chose the name to honor both of his daughters at once. The city today lies in Okaloosa County, Florida.

Residents first proposed a public library on February 4, 1974. Volunteers ran it in a building of just 585 square feet, with no tax support. After a citizen petition, a new and larger library opened on March 9, 1992.
