About Ocean City, Florida
Ocean City is a census-designated place in Okaloosa County, just north of Fort Walton Beach and beside the community of Wright. In 1961 the only fire department nearby belonged to the City of Fort Walton Beach, so a group of residents from Ocean City and Wright set out to create one that would serve their own neighborhoods.
- A fire district since 1962The neighbors' long planning paid off in July 1962, when the Ocean City-Wright Fire Control District was created. Its first engine was a pumper and tanker rebuilt from an old gas tanker truck, and for the next few years the district ran on volunteers alone.
- The area's first Jaws of LifeIn the late 1970s the department wanted a Jaws of Life tool for cutting people out of wrecks, but it couldn't afford one. Members asked the community for donations, and after a few months of work enough money had come in to buy it. No other department in the area had one yet.
- 6,314 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 6,314 people in Ocean City, up from 5,550 in 2010.
