About Lake Success, New York
In 1939 the federal government bought a large tract here for the Sperry Gyroscope Company. The plant built military and navigation gear, and it had 22,000 workers during World War II. From 1947 to 1952, part of the old plant housed the United Nations. The UN stayed until its permanent New York City headquarters was finished.
Europeans first settled the area in 1783, and the community was known as Lakeville. People used that name until about 1927, around the time the village incorporated as Lake Success. The new name came from the kettle lake of the same name.
