About Manhasset Hills, New York

Manhasset Hills is a hamlet of 3,649 people on Long Island, part of Nassau County's Town of North Hempstead. Its older name is Plattsdale, and the Long Island Motor Parkway once ran along its northern edge.

Builders had turned most of the hamlet's open land into neighborhoods by the late 1950s. One of the last large tracts left, 24 acres, went to Barney and Martin Spiegel, who built Cherrywood Homes there: 88 split-level houses, all planned by the architect A.H. Salkowitz.

  • A neighborhood fight wonIn the 1980s and 1990s, about 1,000 residents fought a State of New York plan to open a group home for people with mental disabilities in Manhasset Hills. Worried about their property values, they tried to change the law to block it. They succeeded, and the state opened the home in nearby New Hyde Park instead.
  • Where the Motor Parkway ranThe old Long Island Motor Parkway passed through the hamlet along its northern border. The Old Courthouse Road Bridge, a historic span, still crosses its former route, and the parkway's old right-of-way now carries a power transmission line through the area.
  • Cornell-Van Nostrand HouseThe Cornell-Van Nostrand House stands inside Clinton G. Martin Park, one of two parks the Town of North Hempstead keeps in the hamlet, along with Ridder's Pond Park. The house is listed both nationally, on the National Register, and locally, on the town's own landmark registry.
