About Lexington, Massachusetts

Lexington is a town of 34,454 people in Middlesex County, about 10 miles from downtown Boston. The Massachusetts General Court bought the land from the Squaw Sachem of Mistick in 1639, when it still lay inside Cambridge, and farm families began clearing it around 1642. For years about thirty of those families traveled six to eight miles, and the same distance home, to attend church in Cambridge. Cambridge refused their petitions in 1682 and 1684, but in 1691 they won a parish of their own, Cambridge Farms, and in 1713 it was incorporated as the town of Lexington.

In 1711 the townspeople pooled their money for a militia training field, buying one and a half acres for it. Around midnight on April 18, 1775, Paul Revere and William Dawes rode in to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams, who were staying with the Reverend Jonas Clarke, that British troops were marching toward Concord. Soon after sunrise about 77 men of Captain John Parker's company stood on that field to meet them. An unknown person fired a shot, and in the exchange that followed eight Lexington men were killed and ten wounded. The British moved on to Concord, and the Revolutionary War had begun.

  • Guests on the CommonVisitors kept coming to see where the war began. President Washington came out on November 5, 1789, and ate dinner at Munroe Tavern. Lafayette arrived on September 2, 1824, riding beneath an arch made of evergreens and flowers, where fourteen veterans of the battle waited to greet him. In May 1852 the town welcomed the Hungarian exile Louis Kossuth, who called Lexington the first scene of a revolution.
  • Training teachers in 1839A state normal school, built to prepare young people to teach, opened in 1839 in the academy building on the Common. It started with just three pupils, and the 1890 county history described it as the first school of its kind in America.
  • Emerson in East LexingtonEli Robbins put up the Stone Building in 1833 to serve East Lexington as its lyceum and meeting hall, and speakers there included Lucy Stone, Charles Sumner, Wendell Phillips and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson also preached to the local congregation from 1836 to 1838. The congregation's first minister, Charles Follen, designed its eight-sided church, built in 1839, but he was lost in a shipwreck while traveling to the dedication. Follen Community Church is Lexington's oldest standing church building.
  • 721,000 gallons of milkLexington stayed a farm town long after the Revolution, and by 1880 dairy led the way. That year the census counted 721,000 gallons of milk, which the 1890 county history believed ranked among the highest totals in the country. Trains carried the milk to Boston from the center depot, while teams hauled more to Cambridge, Somerville, Woburn, Newton and Waltham.
