About Lexington, Washington

Lexington is a community of 3,834 people in Cowlitz County. It lies along the Cowlitz River's western side, roughly 9 miles upstream from where the river ends. The 2010 census counted it as part of the West Side Highway area, and the 2020 census listed it as a place of its own.

Its biggest test came from the river. When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, mud poured into the Cowlitz and left the town facing a serious flood risk, which engineers spent the next year removing.

  • Mud in the CowlitzThe eruption's mudflows dropped sediment as much as 15 feet deep into the lower Toutle and Cowlitz river channels. At Lexington the mud stayed inside the old riverbed, but it took up so much of the channel's room that the next big flood could have spilled over into parts of the community.
  • Dredged by May 1981The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started dredging the Cowlitz in June 1980 and finished in May 1981. The work dropped the predicted water level of a major flood by 5 feet at Lexington, 7.8 feet at Castle Rock and 4 feet at Kelso. Parts of all three towns that such a flood would once have covered were expected to stay dry, as long as the channel held its new shape.
