About Lincoln, Idaho

Lincoln is a community of 4,556 people in Bonneville County, just east of Idaho Falls. It began in 1899, when Latter-day Saint families settled southwest of Iona decided Iona was too far away for their children's schooling and put up a schoolhouse in their own district. The settlement that grew around it was first known as Centerville.

In 1903 the Utah Sugar Company picked the spot for a new factory and bought land for it. Joseph F. Smith, president of the Latter-day Saint church, gave the main address when the cornerstone was laid, and a crowd of about 4,500 people turned out. The factory became the heart of the town and kept running for 75 years.

  • Heber Austin's treesHeber C. Austin built the sugar factory and served as its superintendent. He also put up many houses for the factory's workers and had trees planted along the streets and around the company grounds. A church branch formed here in 1904 as part of the Iona Ward, and in 1905 it became the separate Lincoln Ward, with Austin as its bishop.
  • 75 seasons without a missThrough all its years of operation, the Lincoln sugar factory ran a campaign every season. It started out handling 600 tons of beets a day, grew to 4,400 tons a day, and over its working life it turned out more than 4 billion pounds of sugar.
  • 500 people in 1930In 1930 Lincoln had 500 people, and 83% of them were Latter-day Saints. The count was still around 500 in 2000, but as the Idaho Falls area spread outward, Lincoln grew to 3,647 people by 2010 and 4,556 by 2020.
