About Linglestown, Pennsylvania
Linglestown is a community of 6,539 people in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, at the foot of Blue Mountain. In 1765 Thomas Lingle bought land in what was then Paxton Township and planned a village of 90 lots for European settlers new to the area. He named it the Town of St. Thomas, for the apostle who shared his first name, and the plan he drew on sheepskin survives with every lot number and street name.
Lingle died in 1811 and was buried in the Wenrich's Church cemetery on the east side of the village, a churchyard that now belongs to St. Thomas United Church of Christ. After his death, people began calling the place Lingle's town, and the name settled into Linglestown. Because it sat at a busy crossroads below the mountain, the village grew into the local center for trade, worship and schooling.
“There is no town in the county that has produced more or better teachers and is better represented in the normal schools and colleges than Linglestown.”
- Schools since 1765Linglestown's schools go back to the same year Lingle laid out the town. By 1883 the oldest house still standing was a log building raised about 1771, and county historian William Henry Egle named it the oldest house in town.
- Birthplace of a denominationThe Church of God began in Linglestown, where the denomination put up its first building and laid out its first cemetery. St. Thomas UCC, whose churchyard holds Thomas Lingle, is the oldest congregation in the village.
- A flagpole in the roadA flagpole stands in the middle of the road at the center of the village square. Talk of changing the square began in 1996, and a first idea to move the pole and add a traffic light was rejected. The Linglestown Plan followed on March 31, 2000, and Lower Paxton Township approved a revised version on February 20, 2007, built around roundabouts to slow traffic.
- Roundabouts on the squarePennDOT awarded the roundabout work to E. Wintermyer Co. of Etters on September 11, 2009. The roundabouts at the village square opened to two-way traffic in June 2010, and the rest of the road through the center of Linglestown followed in November 2010.
- Fireworks at Koons ParkKoons Park covers 33 acres in the heart of Linglestown, with ball fields, courts, pavilions and a pool. The Linglestown Fire Company, founded in 1934, sponsors a July 4 fireworks show there, usually on a weekend near the holiday, and it draws well over 2,000 people.
