About Long Island, Maine
Long Island was once part of the city of Portland. In 1990 Portland reassessed property, and island taxes rose sharply. Many residents felt they paid far more than the services they got back. They voted to secede, and on July 1, 1993, they became the Town of Long Island.
In 1903 the U.S. Army bought nearly 10 acres here, with a hill above Hussey Sound, and set up searchlights to guard the bay. That August, about 1,400 Marines and sailors landed in a mock invasion and captured the 300 troops defending the island.
- The island at warDuring World War II, Casco Bay was a Navy base for destroyers that guarded Atlantic convoys. Long Island held a torpedo school, a fuel depot, gun batteries and a seaplane base that ran from 1943 to 1946.
