About Lorain, Ohio
Lorain is a city of 65,211 people in Lorain County, where the Black River empties into Lake Erie. It started out before 1834 as Black River Village, and a plat for the town was filed that year. Officials renamed it Charleston in 1837, but the people who lived there refused the new name and went on calling their village Black River.
The village was finally incorporated under the name Lorain in 1874, and Conrad Reid took office as its first mayor on April 6 of that year. Lorain became a city in 1896. Its borders took in most of old Black River Township, along with pieces of Sheffield, Amherst and Brownhelm townships.
- The tornado of June 28, 1924A little after 5 p.m. on a Saturday, a tornado that had already struck Sandusky crossed Lake Erie and tore into downtown Lorain, killing 78 people in five minutes. Fifteen died when the State Theatre on Broadway collapsed on an audience of about 200. The storm wrecked 500 homes, damaged a thousand more and battered the American Shipbuilding yards before moving toward Sheffield and Avon. An Ohio historical marker stands at 383 Broadway, the theater's site.
- Lakeview Park since 1917Mayor Leonard M. Moore set aside Lakeview Park in 1917 so the public would have more room on the lakefront. A giant Easter basket sculpture went up there in 1935, and Lorain families still pose for a photo beside it every Easter. The rose garden opened in 1932. It holds 2,500 roses in 48 beds laid out as a Rotary wheel with eight spokes, in honor of the 17 local groups that paid for it.
- The Twin Bridges of 1940Two new bridges over the Black River opened on the same day, October 12, 1940, and people called them the Twin Bridges. The Erie Avenue Bridge, now named for Medal of Honor recipient Charles Berry, is a 1,052-foot bascule bridge. When it was built it was the largest bascule bridge in the world. Its span still opens about 700 times a year. The 21st Street Bridge is now the Lofton Henderson Memorial Bridge.
- Ships, steel and FordsShipbuilding was Lorain's first industry, and the American Ship Building Company kept a yard here. Over time the city added Ford's Lorain Assembly Plant and the U.S. Steel mill on the south side, along with smaller makers such as Thew Shovel and Lorain Products Corporation.
- The Palace since 1928The Lorain Palace Theatre opened downtown in 1928 and is still showing shows today. The Palace Theatre Building joined the National Register in 1978.
