About Lynwood, California

Lynwood is a city of 67,265 people in Los Angeles County, between South Gate and Compton in the Los Angeles Basin. Its ground was once part of Rancho San Antonio. In 1810 the king of Spain rewarded Don Antonio Maria Lugo for his military service with 11 square leagues, or 29,514 acres, and that rancho later became Lynwood and its neighbors, from Bell and Maywood to Montebello and South Gate.

Early in the 20th century, a landowner named Charles H. Sessions ran a dairy creamery here and named it for his wife, Lynne Wood. The Pacific Electric Railway then gave the dairy's name to its local station. When the town incorporated in 1921, it took the same name, Lynwood.

  • A depot from 1917The Pacific Electric Railway built the Lynwood depot in 1917 for its Santa Ana Line. Interurban trains stopped there on their way to Los Angeles and nearby towns. The depot joined the National Register in 1974.
  • New leaders from 1983Lynwood was once mostly non-Hispanic white. Voters seated a Black member on the city council for the first time in 1983, and two years later, in December 1985, Robert Henning took office as Lynwood's first Black mayor. Evelyn Wells and Paul Richards were among the Black mayors who came after him, and in 1997 Armando Rea became the city's first Latino mayor.
  • Plaza MΓ©xicoThis shopping mall at 3100 E Imperial Highway was designed after the plazas of Mexico, and it holds events that celebrate Mexican traditions. Lynwood also keeps three sister cities in Mexico: Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Talpa de Allende.
