About Meridian, Pennsylvania
Meridian is a community of 3,760 people in the western part of Butler Township, Butler County, a few miles west of the city of Butler. In 1908 an interurban trolley, the Pittsburgh, Harmony, Butler and New Castle Railway, tied the community to Butler, Evans City and Pittsburgh. The cars kept running until June 15, 1931, when buses took over the route.
- American Glass Research, 1936In 1936 the English-born Frank Preston bought 90 acres in Butler Township and started American Glass Research there. The firm grew into one of Butler County's global companies. Frank and his wife, Jane, also made their home on the land. When foreign dignitaries came to visit, the guest's national flag flew beside the American flag, and a ring of signposts on the front lawn gave the miles to cities abroad.
- Preston ParkJane Preston died in 2008, and her will passed the property and everything built on it to the township, which keeps it as Preston Park. The couple were conservationists, and their work helped bring about the Jennings Environmental Education Center, McConnell's Mill State Park, and Moraine State Park with Lake Arthur.
- The Butler rally of 2024On July 13, 2024, a gunman fired at former president Donald Trump during a campaign rally at the Butler Farm Show fairground, which lies partly in Meridian. Trump and at least two others were hurt and one attendee died. A Secret Service sniper killed the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks. Trump came back to the same fairground for another rally on October 5, 2024.
