About Moncks Corner, South Carolina

Moncks Corner is a town of 13,297 people and the county seat of Berkeley County, just south of Lake Moultrie. Before Europeans arrived, the Edisto people, part of the Cusabo, lived on this land. French Protestant Huguenots fled religious persecution and reached South Carolina between 1684 and 1688, and many of them settled here, where they soon married into English colonial families.

The town traces its start to 1728, when it was a trading post of a few stores and taverns on land owned by Thomas Monck, whose name it still carries. It grew into a real town after the railroad came, received a charter on December 26, 1885, and was incorporated on December 15, 1909.

“In April 1780 Banastre Tarleton gained his first notable victory at Moncks Corner, surprising and routing an American force commanded by Isaac Huger and severing Charleston’s final link to the backcountry.”
