About Moncure, North Carolina
Moncure was founded in 1881. One founder, Thomas Jefferson Moncure, was an engineer for the railroad that became the Seaboard Air Line. The town sits near where the Deep and Haw rivers join to form the Cape Fear River. Moncure was once the westernmost inland port in North Carolina, with steamships linking it to the Atlantic Ocean.
Benjamin Gunter Womble was another of the founders. He was a Confederate veteran and owned the Womble Hotel. He served as the first postmaster for 30 years. The old post office now stands on the Womble property, which his family has always owned.
