About Monroe, Ohio
Monroe is a city of 15,412 people that spreads across parts of Butler and Warren counties in southwestern Ohio, within the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Its founders laid out the town in 1817 beside the pike that ran between Dayton and Cincinnati, so travelers on that road passed through it from the start. Growth came slowly at first, and by the early 1830s the town still counted only 119 residents, who shared a single store.
- Named for a presidentThe town carries the name of James Monroe, who served as the fifth President of the United States.
- Methodists by 1823Methodists were already holding services in Monroe by 1823, six years after the town was laid out. They organized a formal church only later.
- King of Kings, then Lux MundiMonroe was home to the King of Kings statue, which people nicknamed "Touchdown Jesus" and "Big Butter Jesus." Lightning struck it in 2010, and the fire that followed destroyed it. The Lux Mundi statue now stands on the same site.
