About Moundville, Alabama

Moundville is a town of 3,024 people, mostly in Hale County, though its northern edge crosses into Tuscaloosa County, just below the Black Warrior River. Settlers founded the first town here in 1823 and called it Carthage. It soon counted a cotton gin, a grist mill, a warehouse, eight stores and several saloons. It lost its charter in 1826 for reasons no one has explained, and a brutal winter in 1831 stalled its growth, so Carthage stayed a farming community.

In 1891 A. H. Griffin bought 600 acres close by and laid out a new town. He named it Moundville for the great Indian mounds inside its limits, and Carthage was folded into it. A tornado tore through downtown in 1904 and killed 37 people. Residents rebuilt, the state opened a normal school there by 1907, and Moundville was incorporated on December 22, 1908.

  • A ceremonial center by 1200A state historical marker says the village here was built as a ceremonial center around 1200 to 1400 AD, and its temple mounds and burials survive. Moundville Archaeological Park, a National Historic Landmark, covers 320 acres and holds 26 Mississippian mounds. The biggest ones stand near the Black Warrior River and get smaller farther from it, perhaps a sign of their builders' rank. A palisade around the center was rebuilt at least six times.
  • Cucumbers for picklesIn 1914 the Southern Pickle Company of Birmingham moved part of its work to Moundville. Many local farmers turned to growing cucumbers to sell to the company, and the crop became a major source of cash for the area.
  • Let Us Now Praise Famous MenDuring the 1930s, writer James Agee and photographer Walker Evans recorded the lives of tenant farmers around Moundville. Their work became the book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, published in 1941, and Cotton Tenants, published posthumously in 2013.
  • A railroad town of 475By 1913 Moundville was a post office and station on the Alabama Great Southern Railroad, with 475 people in the town itself. The Bank of Moundville was its only bank, and sawmills and lumber plants were its chief industry. Its first newspaper had started in 1911.
