About Murphy, Idaho
In 1934 Owyhee County voters narrowly chose Murphy to replace fading Silver City as county seat. A new courthouse went up in 1936. Yet state law never recorded the move. County prosecutor G. Edward Yarbrough found the error, and the legislature finally made it official in 1999.
Murphy grew around the end of the Boise, Nampa and Owyhee Railroad, which Colonel William H. Dewey built in 1899. Dewey meant to push the tracks on to Silver City. The Owyhee Mountains mines stopped paying, so the line ended at Murphy. Trains ran until 1947.
