About Neah Bay, Washington

The town takes its name from the bay. That name comes from Makah Chief Dee-ah. In the Klallam language, his name sounds like Neah. In 1792, Spain's Salvador Fidalgo began building a fort at the bay. The project failed within a year. Its cannon and supplies went north to the Spanish colony of Santa Cruz de Nuca.

Neah Bay sat near dangerous Cape Flattery, where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets the ocean. Being close to the Pacific made it a busy stop for salmon fishers. In 1912, over one hundred gasoline seine boats and one thousand trollers called it their port. Canneries and mild curing plants handled the catch.

  • Whaling canoes of Neah BayThe tribe at the Neah Bay agency built seafaring canoes with great skill. In those canoes, they went far out on the ocean to hunt whales. From cedar bark and roots, they made clothing, blankets and lines for fishing and sealing.
