About New Braintree, Massachusetts

In the late 1980s Governor Michael Dukakis began building a state prison in New Braintree. The town fought it, joined by Boston radio host Jerry Williams and a local citizens group. Governor William Weld stopped the work after his election. Since 1992 the site has been home to the Massachusetts State Police Academy.

During King Philip's War in 1675, the area became a Nipmuc stronghold called Menimesit. That year Nipmuc fighters routed colonial soldiers here in a battle known as Wheeler's Surprise. Philip himself visited Menimesit. Mary Rowlandson wrote about it in her famous captivity narrative.
