About North Brookfield, Massachusetts

North Brookfield is a town of 4,735 people in Worcester County, in central Massachusetts. In 1660 John Pynchon of Springfield bought the Quaboag Plantation for a settlement midway between Boston and Springfield, and twenty Ipswich families moved there to settle it. The plantation was named for the Quaboag people, who had traded with his father, William Pynchon, for many years.

Europeans settled this part of the plantation by 1664, and for generations it belonged to the town of Brookfield. In 1812 North Brookfield broke away and was incorporated as a town of its own. West Brookfield and East Brookfield were later cut from Brookfield's land as well, and North Brookfield opened its public library in 1879.

“I’ve knocked around everywhere, but there’s no place like North Brookfield.”
George M. Cohan, 1934
  • A Town House from 1864The town put up its third town hall in 1864 at 185 North Main Street. The wood-frame building mixes Italianate and Second Empire trim, and its 60-foot tower stands where North Main meets Summer Street. The North Brookfield Town House joined the National Register in 2001.
  • Cohan's summer townAs a boy, George M. Cohan left the vaudeville circuit each summer for his grandmother's home here, where he became friends with the baseball player Connie Mack. His family usually staged a show at the town hall. He later set his 1907 musical 50 Miles from Boston in North Brookfield, with his song "Harrigan," and he returned in 1934 with the cast of Ah, Wilderness!
  • Amasa Walker and his sonAmasa Walker moved here as a boy with his parents and opened a business in 1820. He co-founded the Free Soil Party in 1848, was the state's Secretary of the Commonwealth from 1851 until 1853 and then went to Congress. His son Francis came at three and healed here from Civil War wounds. Francis directed the 1870 and 1880 censuses and produced the first Statistical Atlas of the United States, then became MIT's third president.
  • Stevens Pond to Lake LashawayStarting around 1825, Jeduthan Stevens dammed a stream to run his mills, and the lake that formed behind the dam was first known as Stevens Pond. Today it is Lake Lashaway, split by the line with East Brookfield. To the northeast, a dam built in 1848 raised Brooks Pond close to its present size, and the pond feeds the Five Mile River.
  • The Rolling Stones in 1981A Clark University professor turned his farm into the Long View Farm recording studio in 1974. In 1981 the Rolling Stones came to North Brookfield to rehearse there.
